What you'll need

If you're using one of our beginner cross stitch kits, everything is already in the box — fabric, pre-sorted thread, a needle, and the pattern. If you're working from a pattern on its own, you'll also want some 14ct AIDA fabric, embroidery floss, an embroidery needle, and a small pair of scissors. You can find supplies in our accessories collection.

How to cross stitch, step by step

  1. Find the center of your fabric. Fold it in half, then in half again — the middle point is where most patterns start.
  2. Thread your needle. Cut a length of floss about as long as your forearm, separate the strands as your pattern specifies (usually two), and thread the needle. Don't tie a knot.
  3. Make your first half-stitch. Come up through the fabric from the back at the bottom-left corner of a square, then go down at the top-right to make a diagonal line (/).
  4. Complete the X. Come up at the bottom-right and down at the top-left to cross over the first diagonal. That's one finished cross stitch.
  5. Follow the chart. Each square on your pattern equals one stitch, and each color or symbol tells you which thread to use. Work one color area at a time.
  6. Finish off. When a thread runs low, slide it under a few stitches on the back to secure it, then snip the tail. No knots needed.

Beginner tips

  • Work in good light and take breaks — this is meant to be relaxing, not perfect.
  • Keep your tension even: pull snug, but not so tight that the fabric puckers.
  • If you miscount, don't panic — just unpick the last few stitches and try again.
  • Start small. A keychain or bookmark is a perfect first finish.
