How do you start cross stitch without a knot?
The easiest no-knot method for beginners is the loop start (it’s clean, secure, and keeps the back of your project tidy).
Here’s how to do the loop start:
- Pull out one single strand of floss from the cluster of 6.
- Fold it in half so you have two strands with a loop on one end.
- Thread the two loose ends through your needle.
- Bring your needle up from the back of the fabric, leaving the loop on the back.
- Make your first half-stitch, then pass your needle through the loop on the back before pulling tight.
That’s it—no knot needed.
Alternative no-knot option: the pin stitch (more advanced), or the waste knot method (knot used temporarily and removed later).
How many strands of floss for cross stitch?
Most cross stitch is done with 2 strands of embroidery floss, but it depends on your fabric count and the look you want.
A simple beginner guideline:
- 14-count Aida: usually 2 strands (most common)
- If you want fuller coverage: try 3 strands
- If you want a lighter, more delicate look: 1 strand
If you’re using a kit, follow the instructions included—your designer chose the strand count to match the fabric and design.
Is cross stitch easier than embroidery?
For most beginners: yes, cross stitch is usually easier than embroidery.
Why?
- Cross stitch uses one main stitch (the “X”) repeated in a grid.
- The fabric holes guide your needle placement.
- It’s more “paint-by-number” than freehand.
Embroidery can be beginner-friendly too, but it often involves multiple stitch types and more freedom (which can feel less straightforward at first).
If you want a relaxing, structured craft with a clear path: cross stitch is a great place to start.
What’s the best cross stitch fabric for beginners?
The most beginner-friendly fabric is Aida cloth, especially 14-count Aida.
Why 14-count Aida is great for beginners:
- The holes are easy to see
- The grid is clear and consistent
- It’s forgiving and easy to handle
Other fabrics (like linen or evenweave) can be beautiful, but they’re usually better once you’re comfortable with the basics.
What’s the difference between stamped and counted cross stitch?
This is a big one—and it’s the reason many beginners fall in love with stamped kits.
Stamped cross stitch
- The design is printed directly on the fabric
- You stitch right over the printed areas
- You don’t have to count squares as much
- It’s typically faster to learn and feels more relaxing
Best for: beginners, travel stitching, low-stress projects, “I just want to stitch” energy.
Counted cross stitch
- The fabric is blank
- You follow a pattern chart and count where each stitch goes
- It gives you more flexibility for complex designs
- It can be super satisfying once you get the hang of it
Best for: stitchers who enjoy patterns, precision, and detailed designs.
If you’re brand new and want the easiest start: stamped cross stitch is usually the smoothest entry point.

I ordered 2 luggage tags that were perfect. I ordered 2 more and can not open them to insert my cross stitch. Can you advise me how to open it without ruining the tag.
What is the size of the needles that are included in the kits? I am having a bit of trouble threading them and am considering buying a different size
I just bought my first kit and spent the last 20 minutes trying to thread the miniscule needle head. It’s impossible and I also tried just threading a single strand. I’m now going to Honby Lobby to buy another needle. Luckily I opened this the day before my flight or I would have been upset on the plane. I’m not a beginner- I needlepoint and embroider. It should t be this hard. Disappointed in my first experience.
To whom it may concern,
I just purchased 7 sets of the luggage tag kits. One is the Pink airplane and it came with a green tag. It doesn’t match at all. I don’t like it at all. The picture clearly shows it in pink. Then my second concern is Shelly the Sea Turtle is only one sided, so it’s not really a luggage tag at all. My third concern is that these tags are going to be gifts. How do I finish the project and then have them put what they want on the information side?
Thanks,
Teresa
